Mercedes Introduces E 300 BlueTEC Hybrid

Release as a 2012 model to hit showrooms late next year. The car features the modular hybridization of the BlueTEC platform and pairs a 2.2L 4-cylinder diesel (CDI) engine (204hp) coupled with a hybrid system which includes a 15kW (20hp) motor.

The motor, as with all BlueTEC models, is positioned between the engine and the transmission (a 7-speed automatic). It is designed to both supplement the engine as a booster and to act as an generator/alternator during braking. It is also a starter for stop-start operation. It can drive the car all-electric for short distances at lower speeds.

Total output from the vehicle is 224hp and 580Nm (428lb-ft) of torque. The car achieves 57mpg (US) and joins the S 400 and ML 450 hybrids in Mercedes' lineup.
