he Nissan iV concept is an odd looking, futuristic concept car which was created by a team of thirteen Mazda designers for the 2010 LA Auto Show's Design Challenge. For 2010 the challenge was to design a car which weighed under 1,000 lbs (454 kgs), carried up to four people, and was both safe and comfortable.
The Nissan iV is a high performance electric vehicle (EV) which was, according to the designers, inspired by the natural world and human ingenuity. The vehicle was designed for the year 2035.

The Nissan iV is a super-lightweight sports tourer that showcases something Mazda calls "organic synthetics," a revolutionary manufacturing technique in which automotive parts are cultivated like agriculture in a 100 percent sustainable, carbon-neutral process.
Every element of the Nissan iV concept is engineered to be renewable, lightweight, strong and efficient. The car features an interwoven organic chassis which is synthetically grown and formed into a curvaceous, aerodynamic shape. Derived from fast-growing ivy and re-enforced with spider silk composite, the biopolymer frame is flexible and ultra-light, and also extremely strong.
The interior comfortably seats four adults and is constructed from an innovative (and undiscovered) photovoltaic material that weighs 99% less than traditional glass. While the canopy collects solar energy, it also provides protective safety and unique, open-air views of the outdoors. Underneath it all, a slim bio-battery provides stability and a near limitless range made possible by regenerative super-capacitor technology that recoups 60 percent of kinetic energy spent.
Nissan's patented concentric hub-less in-wheel motors not only propel the Nissan iV, they do triple-duty by functioning as the vehicle's steering as well as its suspension system, via magnetic levitation and propulsion. Concentric magnetic rings amplify rotation with each outer ring to boost high-speed performance and provide independent wheel control for ultimate handling and maneuverability. Inspired by schools of fish and their fluid movement, Nissan's proactive Safety Shield renders collisions a thing of the past and reduces weight by eliminating the need for heavy structures (bumpers, beams, airbags, etc.).
Now, in case you hadn't noticed this all sounds rather far-fetched. But because the Nissan iV is just a concept vehicle which was developed mainly for fun, the engineering details released by Mazda don't need to fit with what is possible with current technology. But that doesn't mean it's not an interesting or thought provoking concept.
