Home  >  WOT  >  Fisker Karma Production Slated to Restart This Year Fisker Automotive could restart production of its Karma plug-in hybrid sometime this year if all goes according to plan. Following a number of struggles, the automaker was recently acquired by the Wanxiang Group, a China-based auto parts company that will also move forward with Fisker’s plan to produce a second model that will slot below the Karma. Wanxiang, which acquired Fisker’s remaining assets earlier this month for $149.2 million, is working on the automaker’s business plan, including sales and production targets. In an interview with Reuters, the boss of Wanxiang’s U.S. division said, "Obviously we want to sell more than what Fisker sold before under its previous management. We would like to restart Karma production within a year." Before ceasing production over a year ago, Fisker sold a total of about 1800 Karma vehicles, according to Reuters. Ni said initial production will be take place at the automaker’s plant in Finland and will eventually expand to the U.S. once demand picks up. Details on U.S. production plans are still slim, but the Reuters report cites a possible partnership with a company in Michigan or commissioning a plant in Delaware that was previously used by General Motors. Fisker originally planned to use that Delaware location to build its second model, the Atlantic sedan. Wanxiang says it will continue and complete development on that car, which should Fisker’s volume model priced more affordably than the Karma. Once sales are established in the U.S. in Europe, Wanxiang hopes to expand its reach into China. “Down the road we are going to look into the China market for sure,” Ni told Reuters. “China is a 22 million unit a year market.
